Why Europe's Record Heatwave Is a Warning for the Bottled Water Cooler Market

Europe just had its hottest day on record. A heatwave is the best week of the year to sell water, and the worst week to run a bottled water cooler route. Here is why the demand spike is a stress test that bottled-water books quietly fail, and what operators and investors should do with the summer cushion.

A heatwave is the best week of the year to sell water. It is also the worst week to be running a bottled water cooler business.
Europe is baking. France recorded its hottest day on record on 24 June 2026, with a national average of 30.0°C, according to the national weather service Météo-France. Spain logged its hottest June days on record. The UK hit a provisional June high of 36.1°C in southern England. The UN says the heat will spread across the continent for at least two more weeks.
Heat sells water. Offices empty their coolers faster and demand jumps. For a water cooler operator, that sounds like good news. Look closer and the heatwave is a stress test. It shows which business model can take the strain, and which one cracks.
Why heat breaks the bottle route
A bottled water dispense (BWD) cooler runs on 15 or 19 litre bottles. Someone has to fill them, store them, drive them, and swap them. In a heatwave, every step gets harder. Demand at each site can double. Delivery vans run hot. Drivers face their own heat-safety limits. Warehouses struggle to hold enough chilled stock. The result is late deliveries, empty coolers, and warm water on the hottest day of the year.
A heatwave is a route business at full stretch, and the customer feels every gap.
A point-of-use (POU) cooler tells a different story. POU means a mains-fed cooler, plumbed into the building's own water line. It chills and filters water on demand. There is no bottle to deliver and no stock to run out. An instant tap system (ITS), the counter-top units that pour boiling, chilled and sparkling water, works the same way. When the heat hits, these machines just keep pouring.
The summer cushion that hides the real problem
Here is the trap. Hot summers prop up bottled water volumes. Zenith's own market data shows that warm years cushion bottled cooler demand, and most of all in Southern Europe. A good heatwave can flatter a bottled book for a whole quarter.
That cushion is the most dangerous number in the business, because it lets operators delay the decision they should be making now.
A heat-driven volume spike is weather, not growth. It does not mean the bottled model is winning. It means the weather did the selling. When the temperature drops, the volume drops with it. POU and ITS revenue behaves differently. It is rental-based, billed monthly, and stays steady whether the week is 18°C or 38°C.
The hottest markets are the most exposed
Geography makes this sharper. The hottest European markets are also the most bottle-dependent. Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy all sit near or above the top end of bottled-cooler share. In Spain, close to nine in ten units are still bottled. These are the markets facing the biggest demand spikes with the least mains-fed capacity to absorb them.
So the heatwave lands hardest exactly where the route model is most stretched. Northern markets that already moved to mains-fed, such as Germany, the Nordics and the Netherlands, feel the demand spike too. They just serve it without a truck.
Workplace hydration is becoming a safety question
There is a second force at work. The UN is urging governments and employers to cut heat exposure in workplaces. The World Health Organization estimates roughly 489,000 heat-related deaths a year between 2000 and 2019. Cold drinking water at work is moving from a perk to a safety requirement.
That changes who buys, and how. A facilities manager under a heat-safety duty wants guaranteed cold water, not a promise that the next delivery will arrive. Reliability becomes the spec. Mains-fed systems win on reliability because they take the delivery risk off the table.
What operators and investors should do
For operators, the smart move is to treat this summer's spike as a warning and spend it on the switch. Use the demand to fund conversions. Offer renewing bottled accounts a mains-fed upgrade while they can still feel the pain of an empty cooler. Keep bottles where there is no mains supply, on building sites and at remote locations, where they still do a real job.
For investors underwriting a bottle-heavy book, normalise out the heat. Strip the summer cushion before you set a run-rate. Ask how the revenue behaves in a cool year. A book that needs a heatwave to hit its numbers is a weather bet dressed up as an annuity.
